How to Monitor EU Safety Gate Alerts Without Reading Every Notification

The European Commission’s 2025 Safety Gate report records 4,671 alerts, the highest annual total since the system began in 2003 and an average of close to 100 a week. The same report says cosmetics represented 36% of alerts, toys 16%, and electrical appliances and equipment 11%. Those are system-wide figures—not a forecast of risk for a particular importer.

Start with a scoped watch list

Create watch terms for each active product: category, specific product names and variants, brand, model, importer, manufacturer and known hazards. Not every alert exposes every field, and a commodity code is not consistently available, so do not depend on a single identifier.

Run a repeatable search

Record the source, search terms, filters, run date and reviewer. Inspect individual alert details for identifiers, photographs, hazard, notifying authority and measures. Save the alert URL or identifier for any possible match. A result count without the query boundary cannot be audited later.

Triage before escalating

• Exact or strong match: pause the relevant decision and compare model, brand, images, batch and company details.
• Category or hazard match: request the evidence that addresses the reported failure mode and assess whether it applies to your specification.
• No match: record the result, but do not call the supplier or product “cleared”. The system reflects alerts that authorities have reported; it is not a census of all unsafe products.

Connect each alert to an action

Assign an owner and response: no action with reason, request supplier evidence, inspect stock, stop release, seek laboratory or legal review, notify a platform or use the Safety Business Gateway where required. Keep the decision, evidence and review date together.

Automation boundaries

Automation can rerun watch terms, deduplicate alerts and notify a reviewer. It cannot prove that two similarly named products are the same, determine legal scope from a headline or replace a product-specific risk assessment. A good alert includes the official source, the matched term, uncertainty and the next human check.
